"A Tale of Two Weddings": A Styled Shoot at The Boathouse, East Jordan

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

When approached by two of my favorite wedding vendors in northern Michigan at A13Studios and at FallInLoveEvents about doing a styled shoot during my busiest week of the season last fall, of course I said "yes!" I knew I had to find a way to make it work! And work it did! It ended up as an absolutely gorgeous editorial.

Anora is the manager of The Boathouse, a brand new modern venue on Lake Charlevoix, and also a photographer for A13 Studios. Autumn is a veteran wedding planner and owner of Fall In Love Events. I am the owner and lead designer of Heart Wedding Decor, a wedding and event decor rental and design company in Petoskey.

With the help of my husband of Thomas Heath events, who is a wedding pro of over 20 years and also owner of A+ Entertains, a wedding and event entertainment company, we were able to transport the "stuff" for TWO different styles of weddings, plus some extra vintage decor pieces to decorate a few guest tables as well as a dessert station from @WildFlowerBakery.mi

When Autumn had approached me with the idea of of two different fall-themed styles being staged for this shoot, I knew exactly how to approach it. Once Autumn shared with me a bit about each couple (one a same-sex boho and the other modern elegance with a boho touch), I went to work on the design.

Autumn's chosen color palette was terracotta/rust, kelly/forest green and touches of navy so that is where I started in planning the two different "vibes".

For Samantha and Rachel, the same-sex brides, we went elegant boho. Why? Two words: Ivory and lace. Their dresses were my muse here. For the mock ceremony, our triangle arbor was the show-stopper and the floral, greenery and pampas grass was from Indie Grow Flowers

For the brides' sweetheart table that was topped with a gorgeous terracotta velvet linen, was our very boho rattan chargers, kelly green napkins, dinner plates and rose gold flatware. We also swapped in two different color vintage goblets (in blue and amber). At the base, Autumn and Anora had added my vintage candle holders. The table was topped with a swag of floral and greenery from Indie Grow.

Behind them was our circle arch, that due to high winds off the lake, ended up as a frame for the table rather than be part of the ceremony for the second couple. But what a beautiful set up it turned out to be! The arch and chairs both had a length of my green velvet to add more lush features to this tablescape.

Our second couple was Jene and Chris. I learned that Jene was of Native American descent, so I wanted to add in a circular piece to reference a dream catcher. It was hanging from a velvet ribbon on the face of the sweetheart table! What a cute touch Anora and Autumn!

With a more modern outlook for these two, I chose gold charger plates and flatware for the tables and sweetheart. A menu card by Holly Thomas Design and charcuterie platter from Graze Catering topped the table as well. Due to my schedule, I could not be there, but I would have loved to sample that tray of deliciousness! I also really love those geometric candle holders in this tablescape!

We also provided cocktail tables which I covered with an emerald green velvet linen and topped with more of the geo candle holders. Jene and Chris look so classic here! And one of my favorite shots of the day HAD to be Chris peeking out from the circle arch!

One of the things I try to do for the styled shoots that I participate in is provide decor items for TWO (if not more) different looks. This gives any fledgling photographers and videographers additional footage and also extra content for the remaining vendors. The idea for that came directly from this shoot. Thank you Anora and Autumn! Your styling of my pieces worked great!

I hope you enjoyed this styled shoot as much as I did participating in it. Everyone grab a goblet and let's toast!

Special thanks to Kari Anne Photography for these amazing shots!
